This Halloween was the first Halloween where Finn went Trick or Treating alone with his friends.
Our neighborhood is packed with kids. There was literally, hundreds of kids out Trick or Treating.
This year, a group of Finn’s friends, from school, all met up and decided to go together.
Sarah decided to let him go with his friends and was going to follow them at a distance.
The boys left pretty quickly and with all the kids in the neighborhood, dressed up and trick or treating, Sarah lost track of him. She walked all over the neighborhood and had no clue where they went to. (She’d be a horrible spy. Haha!)
She came back home and was very nervous. This was the first time he’d been on his own.
She kept asking me, “Do you think he’s all right?”
“Yes, he’s fine!” I responded.
After an hour, he and his friends returned from trick or treating. Finn was carrying his candy in his pillow case, and it was half full.
As soon as Sarah saw Finn turn the corner and walk towards her, I saw her entire body relax.
Seeing our kids get older is a great thing. Watching him interact with his friends is hilarious. They tease each other and poke fun.
There will always be times, here and there, when we worry about our kids. But we worry less as they grow up and we can see how they handle themselves in different situations.
We see this in dentistry as well.
Some patients come to our office, super nervous, anxious, crying and shaking in the chair. And we offer them Anxiety Free Dentistry.
As time goes on, their dental visits become less anxious. As they experience these appointments, they become more relaxed.
Their fear becomes more controlled and sometimes they decide that they can do an appointment without the anxiety reducing pills or laughing gas. This is all at their own pace and decision.
I see this, and I remember how they were in the beginning. I see all the progress they have made, the effort they put into their appointments, and I realize that I am very proud of them because this is what they wanted. To feel comfortable in a dental chair (even if it’s just a little bit.)
They are growing through their experience and we are here for them.
