We take teeth cleaning near Lincoln Park, IL, very seriously! While brushing and flossing are important factors in maintaining a healthy smile, they aren’t the only steps necessary to improve the strength and longevity of your teeth and gums.
Brushing can remove most of the plaque buildup on your teeth, but it simply isn’t enough to remove tartar. Tartar is a hardened deposit on your tooth that results from a buildup of plaque along the gums. These hardened deposits, if not routinely removed, can cause cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease. This is why routine or preventive cleaning appointments to maintain optimal oral health should be a part of everyone’s dental hygiene regimen, at least once every six months.
After your teeth have been thoroughly cleaned and polished, Dr. Couret performs a dental exam to ensure you don’t have any underlying dental concerns. This exam includes the following:
Digital X-Rays – If necessary, dental x-rays will be taken in order to find decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. For children, these x-rays are also used to diagnose developmental problems that can arise with newly erupting teeth.
Oral Cancer Screening – Dr. Couret will check your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
Gum Health Screening – The gums and bone around your teeth will be examined for any signs of periodontal (gum) disease.
Check for Tooth Decay – Dr. Couret will test the surfaces of all your teeth to ensure that no decay or cavities are forming.
Examine Existing Restorations – If you already have any fillings, crowns, implants, or other dental restorations, Dr. Couret will check to confirm that they are still in strong shape.
