In the 20 years that I have been practicing dentistry, I’ve never seen the amount of cracked teeth and grinding that I am seeing today.
People are working harder than ever, without the ability to unwind with a nice vacation.
I constantly hear from my patients that their days feel like Groundhogs Day. Everyday feels the same.
Some of my patients love working from home and feel they are more productive. But there is a huge part of my patient population, that feel that working from home has made communication with their colleagues way more complicated.
Many of them will describe their frustration like this: a question they have, could get answered in 2 minutes, in the hallway at work; but now, with remote work, it requires a scheduled Zoom meeting. Many people tell me they are working all the time and are answering emails as early as 5 or 6am and as late as 8pm. Way beyond their normal workday.
A lot of times people do their clenching and grinding even when they are awake.
The definition of clenching is your teeth touching. Many people feel that they have to be squeezing hard to categorize it as clenching.
One of the things you could do is pay attention while you’re awake.
A relaxed position in your mouth is teeth apart and lips apart. The only time your teeth should touch is while you’re chewing. I clench my teeth all day long. I literally catch myself and think, “Oh I’m clenching. I need to separate my teeth.” Start paying attention and see if you are doing it throughout the day. If you’re doing it during the day, you are definitely clenching during the night.
If you are grinding, sometimes you’ll do it during the day. If you are doing it at night, many times, your partner will hear you grinding.
So for grinding, start asking your partner if you are grinding at night. If you wear a retainer at night you will see the scratch marks on the retainer.
Look for evidence of your habits.
And if you are grinding or clenching your teeth, get a professionally fitting night guard, that is customized to your mouth.
In tomorrow’s email, I’ll discuss what to look for when getting a properly fitting night guard.
