Small Town Living

My parents came from a very small town in Cuba called Pinar Del Rio. My mom’s family all lived on the same block.
She was always going in and out of her aunts and uncles’ houses. Everyone would leave their doors unlocked and open and no one had anything stolen.
Crime was almost nonexistent.
Later, my parents moved to Chicago, because there was a ton of opportunity but the simplicity and safety of living in a small town was gone.

My mom allowed us to play outside by ourselves but like most parents, she constantly trained us on what we needed to do if we were approached by an adult stranger.

She did this so often, that it had us so freaked out, and if someone waved to us, we would take off running home. She would tell us, “You have to stay home today.” I’d respond, “WHY?”

Then she’d answer me, “Well, a kid was kidnapped.”

Then I’d respond in a freaked-out tone, “Where? Here in Skokie?”

“No. In Ohio.” my mom answered.

This really hit home to her because of the John Wayne Gacy murders, it was 33 boys and it happened in Norwood Park, close to where I grew up. He was finally arrested in 1978.

This one event changed her behavior forever. It made her more aware of her kids’ safety and she wanted to know where we were, at all times.
