I usually have some type of ache in my body.
I workout regularly and after workouts there is some sort of soreness, always.
On December 23, I was going for a run. I had some hip pain but I decided to go anyways. Once I began running the hip pain went away, which is what I expected.
All that day, my left hip and back side was bothering me but nothing out of the ordinary.
I went to bed as normal and my left leg was bothering me when I slept. I have been living with this ache in my left leg for sometime now. I self-diagnosed myself as having restless leg syndrome.
The next morning, when I tried getting up, I could not stand on my left leg. I had severe pain radiating from my backside, over my left hip, and over my left quadricep.
The pain was extreme and I couldn’t walk more than a few steps. If I tried to force myself to walk, my leg would start to spasm violently.
This was not good because we had a family trip to San Francisco that I was refusing to cancel. Luckily, my pain would go away whenever I would sit in a chair. It was only painful when I would try to stand. And my walk was funny looking.
I thought that I had pulled a muscle, so I called my doctor to see if he could prescribe some medication, until I was able to see him.
When I called him I told him that I thought I had pulled a leg muscle. He then asked me if my back hurt. I replied, “Not at all. Back feels fine.”
He then asked me to touch my toes. “Does that hurt?” he asked. “No.” I replied.
Then he asked me to stand up straight and bend backwards. Just as I did that, a joint of extreme pain shot down my leg.
He then diagnosed me with a pinched nerve in my back and that I did not have a pulled muscle.
I then replied that my back doesn’t hurt. And he mentioned that when I bend backwards, that’s what causes the pain.
It’s funny how the body works. Many times, the source of the problem is not the place where you feel it.
I am happy to say that I feel a lot better but that sciatica royally sucks.
