Last night we had a horrible thunderstorm by our house.
I would see the lightning and count in my head until I heard the thunder. I remember as a kid I would do this to see how far the lightning was from my house.
I have no idea if this was the right equation but it was theory I was working with. I would think every second there was a delay in the thunder, would equate to the thunder/lightning combo being a mile away.
For example, if I saw the lightning, I would count one Mississippi, two Mississippi, and so on until I heard the thunder. So if it was a 3 Mississippi lightning to thunder ratio, then the lightning was 3 miles away.
We used to have a dog that would freak out as soon as he saw the rain start. He would totally freak out with the thunder and shake uncontrollably.
These types of connections with things that we dislike, happen all the time.
For many people, hearing the sound of a dental drill, will elicit an extreme amount of anxiety. Others will smell the chemicals that we use to disinfect and have the same negative reaction.
For these dental phobic patients, we have to ability to offer them a completely, unique experience. Anxiety Free Dentistry.
These patients are given anxiety reducing pills prior to their appointment. They take one pill the night before, to enhance their sleep experience, and another one an hour before their appointment.
Many of these patients will tell us that this was the best appointment they’ve ever had.
If you are an anxious patient and would like to schedule an Anxiety Free Dental Appointment, please call 773-292-1911.
