This last weekend, our town had a bunch of 4th of July activities, for the kids in town.
The kids in the neighborhood decorated their bikes with red, white and blue streamers and rode their bikes around the park.
At this park, the neighborhood set up a jumpy house and were serving hot dogs, chips and refreshments. They also set up different competitive event for the kids.
One of the events was a 50-yard dash. They grouped the kids by age groups and ran several different groups. Then after all the kids ran, they called all the dads to participate in a 50-yard dash.
Now, as a kid, I was a fast runner, but I haven’t run in a competitive race in about 30 plus years. When Finn was born, I was older, so I’m on the old side for dads with kids, in his age group. So, all of his friend’s dads are about 10 to 15 years younger than me.
But I wasn’t scared.
The last time I ran a race, I DOMINATED.
I got up to the starting line of the race. All of my usual feelings came back, just the like old days. My stomach began experiencing some butterflies just before the start of the race.
This was all normal for me. I was playing the race in my head. I would always replay the race in my head before starting the race, and I repeated my old winning ways.
Then announcer yelled, “On your mark! Get set! GO!!!”
I sprang off of the starting line. I was in a very unusual place.
Almost everyone running the race had gotten a better start than me.
I knew that I had to make up my bad start. So I flexed every muscle on my body and began pumping my arms as fast as I could.
The race was over in just a few seconds, and I had gotten smoked by everyone.
Not only that, but I had also pulled my hamstring really bad.
For the next few days, I’ve had some really bad leg pain. Most notable, is that I realized I’m not young anymore and need to take better care of myself.
Most of us tend to believe we are healthier than we actually are. If things don’t hurt, then we believe that it’s all good.
Most of the time, in dentistry, people do not feel pain when they have dental issues. Avoiding your dental appointments until you feel pain might not be the best strategy.
