One of my friends recently had a medical scare with her husband.
On February 13th, her husband was admitted to West Virginia University Medical Center. He had viral pneumonia from Corona Virus HKU1.( NOT COVID-19), but it causes the same type of lung damage.
The doctors decided to ventilate him on February 20th, to help him breathe. Within 24 hours, his condition began to worsen and the ventilator was not working.
The main doctor for my friend’s husband, was headed to the airport for a trip, with his wife. He left an entire team to assist the patient. The doctor was in the limo, going to the airport when he was notified of the patient’s worsening condition. This doctor, Dr. Jeremiah Hayanga, immediately instructed the limo to turn around and he immediately went to the hospital to help save his life.
He decided to place him on a machine called an ECMO. This machine is used for heart surgeries. It takes the blood out of the body, oxygenates the blood in this machine, and redelivers the oxygenated blood back into the patient’s body.
I am happy to say that my friend’s husband is out of the hospital and recovering with his wife and kids. Thanks to Dr. Hayanga, his team, and the other health care workers, my friend’s husband, is now able to watch his kids grow up and spend many more years with his family.
It’s their love for their profession and their passion to help others, that makes them amazing. They are exposed to all kinds of diseases and put their own lives at risk. They do it all the time.
I love these types of stories and this one made my heart swell.
