It was 6:00pm and the phone rang at my parents’ house. My mom answered the phone and turned to my dad, “The call is for you.”
My dad picked up the phone and answered, “Where are you? I’ll be right there.”
He turned to me and said, “Come on. We need to pick someone up.”
I was around 8 years old at the time and we were going to pick up one of my dad’s customers.
My father owned a Shell gas station and one of his customers car broke down, while they were driving to dinner.
Back in the day, phone books were issued to every house and everyone’s phone numbers was listed. This customer knew that my dad lived in Skokie and called us just before dinner.
My dad picked up this customer and his wife, drove them to their dinner reservations at Carson’s Ribs, and then later picked them up after dinner and drove them all the way home to Lake Shore Drive.
To me that was normal, and I thought everyone provided that type of service.
This last weekend, I received 3 emergency calls from my patients. All of my patients have my personal cell number. I get messages all the time from them and I love it.
I love that I’m able to help out.
Knowing that dental pain is a scary thing, and being able to give people peace of mind or helping them manage the discomfort, is very rewarding.
