We have been living in our home for the last 7 years. We live under a Southwest Airlines flight path. Every seven minutes a Southwest plane will fly over our home.
When we first moved into the house, I was very aware of every single plane that flew over. The noise from the planes was very obvious.
But after a few weeks, I stopped noticing the airplanes flying over. The noise completely disappeared and I wondered if the planes stopped flying over.
When I made a conscious effort to pay attention to the sounds, I realized that the planes were still flying over, but I had just stopped noticing. I got used to the sounds surrounding our neighborhood and it became normal.
This happens to us all the time.
Sometimes, we ignore health issues and then eventually, we get used to them all the time. They may not bother us anymore. At least, for a while.
In dentistry, we will see this often.
Patients will have bleeding gums or tender gums. Many of these patients will think that bleeding gums are normal. “They’ve always bled.”
People will even avoid flossing because the flossing will cause the gums to bleed.
Sometimes people will have extreme tooth sensitivity and avoid certain foods and drinks to avoid the pain.
This new sensitivity then becomes their new normal and after a while, they stop noticing the discomfort.
People do this all the time when it comes to their health.
If you have a dental issue that does not seem normal, get it checked out. Call 773-292-1911 or visit us at mydente.com to schedule a consultation.
