Last Saturday, I was talking to one of my friends. She confessed to me that she feels like she has this unique anxiety of interacting with groups. She said that whenever she goes to a party and she doesn’t know many people, she will experience a high level of anxiety.
At the party, she will force herself to talk to people and make small talk. After the party she will analyze what she said and critique herself. She’ll say to herself, “I can’t believe that I said that.”
I immediately responded, “Everyone has some level of anxiety, when they walk into a room where they don’t know anyone or only a few people. It’s totally normal.”
Then I told her that I have social anxiety as well.
She responded, “You. I wouldn’t have imagined that, you are so outgoing.”
I get worried about whether anyone will talk to me, will I be ignored, or will I look stupid? These are just some of the thoughts that go through my head.
I also confessed to her, that I analyze the things that I say after the fact and beat myself up for it.This is no joke. To this day, I will think about things that I did or said in 8th grade and think, “I can’t believe that I said that.” And 8th grade was over 35 years ago.
My point is this… everyone has some level of social anxiety. Some people have super low levels and others have very high levels. But most, if not all humans, feel some level of discomfort when they walk into an unknown environment.
This tends to happen in dentistry as well. Almost everyone that walks into a dental appointment has some level of anxiousness.
For many people, dental anxiety keeps them from going to the dentist. These people will only go if they have pain.
For many years, we did not have a solution for these dental phobic patients.
If you are anxious about going to the dentist and would like to have a relaxed dental experience, please call 773-292-1911 to schedule an anxiety free consultation.
Also, we have been seeing a huge uptick in our referrals. Our existing patients are sending us a lot of friends and family. First, thank you. Second if you have a friend or family that you would like to refer, please have them call 773-292-1911 to schedule an appointment.
