I’ve been receiving a few calls from patients asking me if mail-in aligner systems are any good.
For those of you that don’t know what mail-in aligner programs are, let me give you a quick description – they are teeth-straightening systems that are done without the assistance of a dentist or orthodontist.
There are several different brands in the market now with the same concept. It’s advertised as being the same as Invisalign, but at a heavily discounted rate.
The patient takes their own teeth model impressions and sends them into the company. They may also have some centers that you could go to and one of their staff takes the impressions. Then you receive the trays in the mail, you change out the trays once a week, and voila your teeth are straight….or at least that’s how the company markets it.
The reality is, it’s not that easy or straight forward. I could count on one hand, that after I had finished the patients first set of treatment of Invisalign, I and the patient were completely happy with the final results.
Usually it’s me that’s not satisfied.
You see…straightening teeth is not the only goal that is needed. With straightening teeth, you want them to look nice but that also function properly.
What I mean is, if you have nice straight teeth but only two teeth in your whole mouth are touching together…well now we have a problem. And you can’t chew or eat.
The goal is to have straight teeth, with a nice solid bite. Meaning, all the teeth are contacting simultaneously with the same intensity. In my opinion, this is the most important part of straightening your teeth, how solid your bite comes together.
It makes your teeth last longer, eating is more enjoyable, and it creates less wear and tear, over time. Your bite is the part that is completely neglected by the do-it-yourself teeth straightening products. The bite could only truly be accessed in the patient’s mouth.
That is why, I highly encourage, getting straighter teeth with the help of your dentist. This is what we are trained to do. You will get awesome results and a great bite.
