For the last 10 months, Finn has been snow blowing and cutting the grass at our house to earn some extra money.
He has wanted to expand his business to the neighbors but is scared to ring their doorbell and ask if they need his lawn mowing and snow blowing services.
He wants ME to ring the doorbells of our neighbor’s homes, to promote his new business. I told him that I was not willing to do that.
Then, one of our neighbors suggested that he make a flyer and pass it out around the neighborhood. Finn thought that would be something he could do, and his flyer read like this…
“Hi I’m Finn and I can mow your grass and snow blow for you. I’m 9 years old and I like video games and I enjoy cutting lawns. I have an ego electric green lawn mower and I have a Toro snow blower. I’m a student of Phil Bracht, personally I think he’s the best in town.”
Then he drew a box that says “Picture Me” with an arrow pointing at the box.

For clarification…Phil Bracht is our neighbor and is meticulous with his lawn. He was the one who taught Finn how to mow and edge.
Finn then asked me how many people I thought he would get with his flyer. I responded, “If you pass out 100 you might get 1.” He then responded, “That’s it? This is going to take forever.”
I then told him, that in the beginning, it does take forever. But once you get one customer and you do a good job, then they will refer someone else.
Then that person will refer another person and so on and so on.
Referrals from existing clients is always the best way to grow your business. Your great customers refer other great customers.
Every great business has grown like that. Ours is no different.
