This last weekend, we traveled to San Antonio to attend a wedding. Our suitcase that we had was very beat up. We bought a new one that was pretty large. We wanted one that could fit the entire family’s stuff in one bag.
When we arrived at the airport, we checked our bag in. One of the requirements is that the bag has to weigh 50 pounds or less, or you’ll be charged an extra $100 for the excess weight.
I knew we were close, but I thought we’d be under. I took my suitcase to the baggage check in and placed it on the scale. The scale read 52.5 pounds. My stomach sank.
The employee looked at me and said, “You’re too heavy. You need to take something out or pay the extra $100.”
I was so embarrassed to open my bag and begin to remove our clothing. The airport was packed and there was a line of people behind me that were waiting.
I was very tempted to just pay the extra $100 and not deal with the embarrassment. In my head I was thinking, “No, that’s too much money. Just deal with it.”
As I opened the bag, the very nice employee, looked into the bag and recommended that I take out some jeans. I zipped up the bag and placed the bag on the scale. The scale read 49.5 pounds. I blurted out a loud, “YES!”
The whole process was very quick but most importantly it was not embarrassing at all. Many times, we avoid situations because we feel that we will be ashamed or embarrassed.
Most of the time, the situation is not as bad as we imagined. We see this in dentistry all the time.
We will have patients that will come into our office and haven’t seen a dentist in many years.
When I ask, how long of a time it has been for them not seeing a dentist, many say it’s been a while.
Many will confess, that it’s because they were embarrassed and felt they would be judged.
Feeling judged is something every person on this planet has felt. And here are Dente we are no different.
We’ve all had our own dental issues and know how that felt. Placing yourself in the other persons shoes is the key to being non-judgmental.
So, we do our best to make you feel comfortable and have a good experience.
