One of my friends called me, to see if I could donate some extra masks, for Swedish Covenant Hospital.
I went to the office and donated all that I could.
Now, most people may think the reason we are experiencing such a shortage of gloves and masks, is because our health care system is so overwhelmed with patients.
And YES, our hospitals are seeing a huge amount of patients. This shortage, however, was beginning to happen in late January and early February.
In early February, our dental supply companies started rationing the amount of masks and gloves that we were able to buy.
Especially masks. It turns out, that when China was beginning to experience the high volume of COVID-19 patients, they began to keep all the masks being manufactured in China.
They were not allowing any masks to be exported.
And guess where 99.99% of the masks in the United States are manufactured?
You guessed it. CHINA.
We are basically working with inventory that’s from December and some of January. This shortage problem was happening before we began to see the increased levels of COVID-19 cases that we are seeing now in the US.
I also put my friend in contact with my supply guy, so they could make arrangements to provide Swedish with some more protective equipment.
So, for now, we all have to do our part, to help. Whether it is donating supplies or working from home, let’s do it.
If you have any extra masks that you can spare, all of the hospitals need them. Please consider donating them.
