My cousin and I were raised together. These days, almost every morning, he’ll call me on his way into work. I’m one of the few people that he knows that is up that early.
This last week, he recommended a movie called “McFarland USA.” It was a movie about these high school kids in California, that start a cross country team.
The kids are migrant workers that work in the fields before school. They are part of a close community that help each other out.
The coach is Kevin Costner, who recognizes these kid’s running abilities and starts a cross country team. The school becomes a successful cross-country team and brings the town even closer.
I loved this movie. It really resonated with me. My dental school college roommate had an almost identical story to these kids.
My roommate, Rene and I, lived all four years together. He is probably one of my favorite people and I hold a huge amount of admiration and pride for him.
My roommate was from the Portland, Oregon area. He and his entire family were migrant workers. He and his entire family picked strawberries every morning before school. His family would get paid by the bushel.
So he and his brothers and sisters would all pick strawberries every morning before school. He told me that you would be able to identify which kids picked strawberries that morning, because their fingers were red.
On the weekends, he and his family had a mariachi band to make some extra money. He and his brother got so good that they were asked to perform on Sesame Street.
Rene continued picking strawberries until he moved to Iowa and started dental school. Then during tax season our phone would ring like crazy. It was all the migrant workers that were calling Rene, so he could prepare their taxes. (One of his other side hustles.)
He had been doing it every year since high school for them. He was self-taught and did not charge them a penny.
Rene went back to the very community he came from and helped provide discounted dental care to the children of that community.
Because of this personal connection, I loved the movie, “McFarland USA”. It was a great movie and it reminded me of a great person that was in my life.
My cousin knows me pretty well. He knew that I would love that movie. Pretty much all the things that I like, are the things that he likes. As soon as I finished the movie, I called him to thank him.
