About a week and a half ago I had hernia surgery.
I received a recommendation from a friend, for a surgeon they knew and had used in the past.
As soon as I met this surgeon, I clicked with him immediately. He looked a little young to me, like late 30’s to early 40’s, so I asked him how many of these surgeries had he done. (You know that you’re getting old, when a 40-year-old looks young.)
Without hesitation, he responded, “HUNDREDS.” Then I felt like I was ready to do it.
His entire staff was awesome. Everyone was very helpful and kind. I really felt that I was being taken care of. One of his staff members came into the room and helped schedule all of my appointments. It was very convenient.
The day of the surgery, I wanted to be his first surgery. I got there at 6:30am and the surgery was scheduled at 8:15am.
I came in and at the front desk where I signed in, was a very nice woman who lit up the room with her smile. She was expecting me and said, “Are you Emilio?” I responded, “Yes.”
“Great, we are on time and someone will come out to get you.” She responded.
The nurse came out to the waiting room and brought me back to get me ready. She told me where she grew up and that she now lives in Park Ridge. I shared stories of me hanging out in downtown Park Ridge and watching $2 movies at the Pickwick movie theatre.
Then I was picked up from the nurse’s station, in a hospital bed, and the transporter was a very friendly guy. We started talking and he told me how he went to Farragut High School. We began talking about Chicago High School basketball and it turned out he was Kendall Gill’s little brother.
For those of you who don’t know who Kendall Gill is, he’s one of Chicago’s most famous high school basketball players. We hit it off great.
I had these types of great interactions throughout the entire day with all of the staff. They ran like a well-oiled machine and their human interaction was outstanding.
Having surgery is a scary thing but having a staff to put you at ease and connect with you, at a human level, makes the experience a lot more pleasant.
Coming to the dentist is no different. People are really scared of coming to the dentist.
One of the main things to help people get over their apprehension, is by connecting with them at a human level. It helps them feel relaxed and more at ease.
It’s what our staff does best. Connecting and making people feel at ease.
