On Saturday I was taking a class on sedation dentistry. When I got home, we had two window boxes and some pots on the lawn. Sarah and some of the neighborhood kids had completed finishing hours of gardening planting all of the flowers in the window boxes and pots.
When I got home, Sarah asked me to lift the window box off the grass and place it on its stand. I quickly scanned the block. I saw my English neighbor who played rugby in college back in England. His jawline is similar to a Neanderthal and was the perfect candidate for this job. He is strong, young and capable.
Oliver quickly picked up the one side of the window box like it was a twig on our lawn. I felt like I needed to show off my manhood and quickly picked up the other side. I lifted the window box and heard and felt a pop in my back. Immediately after that, I felt radiating pain that extended to my left hip.
It sucked.
I went to medicate the discomfort with 3 pills of Advil and the pain was still significant. Eventually, after a few more doses of Advil the pain finally became more bearable.
This is a common complaint with dental procedures. People wait to take pain medication after a dental appointment once they feel the pain. Once you start feeling the pain its too late and a lot more difficult to control.
Most of the time, dental pain can be controlled with Advil or Tylenol. The key to pain control is to get the medication {Advil, Tylenol, or some others] before the patient feels the pain.
In our office, we offer our patients some Advil just before we complete the procedure. The reason for this is we want the medication to take effect before the anesthesia wears off. The key to controlling pain is to stay ahead of it.
So if you have a procedure done, work with your doctor or dentist to take pain medication before you feel the pain. Once the patient feels the pain and tries to manage the pain it becomes a lot more difficult to control the discomfort.
I repeat after a procedure, take the pain reducing medication before you feel the pain. It will make your recovery a lot smoother and comfortable.
