Dental Office in Chicago, IL, Explains Teeth Whitening

dental office in chicago ilIf you’re looking to achieve the brightest smile, whitening is a great option. There are a few different options you can choose from to lift the stains on your teeth and get a whiter smile. Our dental office in Chicago, IL, explains more below.

How It Works

Stains are generally caused by things such as smoking, coffee, and red wine. To lift these stains, a peroxide gel is applied to the teeth. Peroxide lightens the teeth by bleaching them and lifting stains that cause the teeth to appear yellow.

Types Of Bleaching

There are different ways to bleach your teeth. These include:

  • At-home bleaching. These are trays that you can purchase over the counter. They come with a low-concentration whitening gel that lifts surface-level stains. The downside of this option is that the trays do not have an exact fit to your teeth, so the gel may seep out and irritate your gums.
  • In-office whitening. When you have your whitening done at our office, we use an extra-strong gel directly to the teeth. This gives you immediate results and a much higher level of whitening than with other options.
  • Dentist-supervised whitening. With this method, our dentist will create a mold that fits your teeth perfectly. You’ll be given a gel to take home and fill the tray with before fitting it on your teeth. This gel is stronger than over-the-counter options, but not as strong as in-office whitening.

Results & Aftercare

A higher-strength gel is the most effective way to whiten your teeth, but you may experience some sensitivity after the procedure. This should subside over a few days. You can use toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth to help relieve the sensitivity if you regularly undergo whitening treatments.

The effects of bleaching can last months, and up to a year if you avoid food and drink that cause staining. If you continue to eat food or drink beverages that contribute to staining, the effects of your whitening treatment will fade faster. Try to avoid these to keep your smile looking great for longer!

World-Class Chicago, IL, Dentist, Dr. Emilio Couret for Exceptional Dental Care
“I’ve been seeing Dr. Couret for my dental needs for years–before he began his own office even. From Day 1–he was amazing. After years with no dental insurance, I needed a lot of work done, and was insanely anxious. Dr. Couret is an expert at putting you at ease and making you feel at home. And he seems to take the time needed to ensure his staff does the same. My teeth look amazing, and you will not find a more caring, comforting team in Chicago. They take the time to not just check your teeth, but to check of any issues that might arise, including cancers that other doctors may overlook. My husband and I are in the middle of planning a long-distance move, and I can’t even begin to think about finding a new dentist. Especially one that can live up to the standard Dr. Couret and his team have set.”
