Dental Myth Busting for Chris

One of my patients asked me to write about one of dentistry’s biggest myths. This one goes out to you, Chris.

The biggest dental myth is that wisdom teeth cause the lower front teeth to crowd. This is completely FALSE!!!

Many people believe that the reason why their lower front teeth are crowded, is because the wisdom teeth are growing in crooked. That these crooked teeth are pushing on all the teeth in front of them and causing the lower front teeth to overlap.

This teeth crowding phenomenon, can still happen, even when the wisdom teeth are not present. Our teeth are always moving and shifting. Actually our entire bodies are constantly changing. Oh, you should have seen me 20 years ago. I was HOT.

We know now that if you do not want your teeth to shift, you must wear a retainer – FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!

Otherwise your teeth will move.

So, wisdom teeth have gotten a bad rap for causing teeth crowding. And now I am setting the record straight.
