One of the most difficult things to fix in dentistry, is a discolored tooth.
Usually what will happen is the person has an injury to the tooth. Years later, that tooth begins to discolor.
Unfortunately, the majority of the time the discoloration happens on the inside of the tooth. What that means is, that if you decided to whiten your teeth the traditional way with bleaching trays, that method would not work.
Your tooth would stay dark.
In the past, we’ve masked this discoloration with a crown. Basically, removing some tooth structure and creating a very thick crown that will help to block the dark color. This is very hard to do. The results can be good, but it is very difficult to make the color of one crown match to the rest of the natural teeth.
We had a patient that was thinking of getting some veneers to cover up her discolored tooth.
We proposed a bleaching technique that whitens the tooth from the inside.
The patient had an injury that chipped her front tooth and had bonding placed 15 years ago. That bonding was beginning to discolor so we proposed to change out the bonding, as well as do the internal bleaching technique.

I loved the outcome of this case.
It was conservative and the cosmetic results were outstanding.
