This last Saturday, I took Finn to his baseball game. Him and I never practice baseball.
Whenever I get home, he wants to play football with me.
As soon as I would walk through the door, he has the football in his hand and says, “Football.” That’s it, that’s all he says.
So this weekend, I took him to his baseball game and usually he’ll play 3rd base. In the middle of the game, Finn’s coach yelled, “Finn, you’re pitching!”
Finn trots out to the pitcher’s mound and begins to warm up throwing. It was horrendous. The ball was all over the place. But the horrible pitching did not seem to bother him. He had a smile on his face and did not look nervous at all.
I, on the other hand, was dying, watching his bad debut. I was plastered against the fence. It brought back a similar memory, when I was in little league baseball, over 40 years ago.
I was sitting on the bench and all of a sudden my coach yelled, “Couret, you’re pitching.” I remember that I wanted to vomit. My nerves were out of control and so was my pitching.
Some of the kids were yelling, “Oh come on! Can’t you just throw a strike!” I felt like I was going to cry but I was doing all that I could, to keep it inside.
That was probably one of the worst memories as a child. I still remember it like it was yesterday. It was very traumatizing for me. It’s probably why I’m not a baseball fan.
Traumatizing events happen to all of us. Some of these traumatizing events affect us so much, that we avoid that event all together. We see this in dentistry all the time.
All it takes is one traumatizing dental appointment and a person is affected forever. They will avoid going to the dentist.
These patients will have such high anxiety, that it prevents them from going to the dentist. For these patients, we have Anxiety Free Dentistry.
They are given an anxiety reducing pill the night before and one pill on the morning of the appointment.
If you are ready to have an anxiety free experience, reach out to us on Facebook, call 773-292-1911 or visit us at mydente.com to schedule an appointment.
