Watching My Patients Grow

Over the years, I have had several of my patients go on to play college sports.

Last weekend, I received a text from one of my patients that he was going to be the starting quarterback and was going to be playing on ESPN. I told him that I would watch.

I’ve known Jake his entire life. His parents were my patients before Jake was even born. When Jake was born, he then became my patient.

I’ve watched him grow up and I've seen how he became the man he is today.

Jake started for Colgate and beat Cornell 41 to 24.

Jake is only a sophomore and beat out upperclassman to be the starting quarterback.

After the game I texted him. I let him know how proud I was of his composure and his great play.

Many people will ask me what I like about being a dentist. By far, the thing I love the most about my job is the great relationships I’ve formed in the 25 years that I’ve been practicing.

Unfortunately, relationship building is a dying service in dentistry.

Today, dentists are trying to see as many patients in an hour as humanly possible. Many times, the patients will see a different dentist each time they have a visit. The visits have become very transactional and no warmth or connection with the patient is stressed.

For some people this is not a big deal. Going to the dentist is like going to Sears and buying a hammer. Many dental offices have followed that model…each time you have an appointment you see a different dentist.

I always thought that was a horrible model and many patients agreed with me. For a lot of people going to the dentist, it is a very personal and sometimes a very scary event.

Getting to know and trust their dentist is crucial for them to have a relaxing and positive experience. Trusting your dentist is very important.

This trust is formed when you can see the same dentist each time you go to your dental appointment.

If you know of anyone that has expressed a dislike for their dental experiences, send them our way. Have them visit us at mydente.com or call 773-292-1911 to schedule their appointment.
