Yesterday, I talked about how I just completed Andre Agassi’s autobiography. The book talked about his rise to the #1 tennis player on the planet and his marriage to Steffi Graf.
A few weeks ago, I watched the movie, King Richard. It was a great movie about tennis players Serena Williams, Venus Williams, and their father Richard Williams.
The one thing they all had in common…Agassi, Graf, and the Williams sisters was they had a very dominant father that pushed them hard at an early age.
At a very early age, they practiced for hours and had very difficult regimens.
Each one of those players became #1 on the planet and made millions of dollars.
But the most amazing thing is that none of them push their kids the same way that they were pushed when growing up. And they don’t push their kids to play tennis.
The strategies their dad’s used on them are different from the strategies they themselves use now, on their own kids.
In dentistry, we saw this also. Back in the day we were taught that we had to be very assertive with children, while performing dentistry on them, to control the situation.
There was a technique called hand over mouth, that when the kid began screaming, you would place your hand over their mouth and then say, “You are not doing that in my office.”
Techniques like this, attributed to the development of millions of people's fear and anxiety of the dentist and then avoiding visits to see a dentist down the road.
