I was never really that into Halloween. As a kid, I never thought about what I was going to be for Halloween. It was always very spontaneous and not well thought out. I just didn’t care about Halloween.
Finn, on the other hand, loves Halloween. He’s been like that since he was a real little kid. He researches costumes and comes to us with the Halloween costume he wants to wear. He will wake up extra early on Halloween because of his excitement.
In the past, getting Finn to come home at a reasonable time, while he’s been out trick or treating, has been a challenge. He wants to keep trick or treating until all hours of the night.
Finn is now eleven years old and is in 6th grade. This has been the first year where his enthusiasm for Halloween has begun to diminish.
His school had a Halloween party that the older kids helped organize. In years past, he told me that the party was really fun. This year he told me that he was bored at the party.
In the past, he’d go trick or treating the entire day. This year he only went for a couple of hours, and he was done. The excitement of Halloween is changing for Finn as he gets older.
For a lot of us, things that we had certain feelings about change as we get older. But other times, the views that we hold as kids stay with us our entire life.
