Last weekend Sarah, Finn and I went to the hardware store by our house. When we left and were getting into our car, I saw 3 women in the parking lot that were asking people for help.
As I walked by this woman, she walked up to me and asked if I could help her get her tire out of her trunk. I said, “Sure.” Then she had a tire iron in her hand and asked, “Do you know how to change a tire?”
My dad owned gas stations, and I began working there when I was about 10 years old.
I’ve probably changed 1,000 tires in my life.
I confidently replied to the woman, “I could change your tire for you.” “Oh, thank you so much!” the woman responded.
I looked at my watch to see how quickly I could change her tire. I wanted to see if I still had the goods.
I immediately began loosening the bolts on the tire. I knew from my experience that if I lifted the car before loosening the tires, it would spin, and I would be unable to loosen the bolts. I quickly loosened all 5 bolts.
Then I placed the jack under the car. Each car has a designated spot under the car where the jack goes so as to not damage the underside of the car. In the past, I have placed it in the wrong position and have dented the undercarriage. So, I located the correct position immediately and began lifting the car from the ground.
Then I began spinning the tire iron and the bolts began coming off one by one. Finn’s job was to grab the bolts and keep them in a safe place.
In less than a minute I had the tire off and the spare onto the car.
Then I quickly began tightening the bolts using the same spinning motion of the tire iron. I lowered the car and tightened all of the bolts.
Then I looked at my watch. It took me a total of seven minutes to change this woman’s tire.
The reason I did it so fast was because I have years of experience and over a thousand changed tires under my belt.
