As I said last week, over the 4th of July weekend my family visited Lake Geneva.
One of the things we like to do is go horseback riding. We stayed at the Grand Geneva Resort and on the premises, they have a stable called Dan Patch Stables.
We go to this stable because everyone there is very nice, and the place is well run.
When we went riding, there was a woman that we saw every time we went there. She joined us on our ride, and it turned out she was the owner of the stable. She gave us her story of how she started the business.
She began working at the stable at 14-years-old. She loved it and was there every day helping the owners manage the business.
When she turned 17, the owners of the stable asked her if she wanted to buy the business. She approached her parents to see if they could help her finance the business and they agreed.
The owner is now in her 40’s and the business is as strong as ever.
When she told us that she was the owner I was not surprised. As soon as you step on the property, you can tell that the owner is close by, and is very attentive to all their employees.
A family-owned business feels different than a corporate business. It has a warmer feel and better customer service. I think that’s true every time.
Today we are seeing this transition in our health care environment as well. From family-owned health care facilities to a corporate model.
We are seeing it happen in dentistry, at record speed.
Many offices that look like a mom-and-pop shop are owned and run by a corporate office. They keep the name to give it the illusion that it's family-owned and change the entire system that gave it that warm inviting feeling.
Dente is becoming part of the ever-shrinking family-owned dental offices. It's sad to see this type of business model fade away!!!!
